Colchicum autumnale

Hello everyone! returned from a brief but wonderful holiday in Val d'Aosta, I am going to update this blog, since it is a long time now that I do not live ^-^....
Fall finally arrives and is felt [the lovers of the summer I do not want ...], with its dark storms that alternate with dry, windy days, with the sky blue and cloudless.
And so the time has come to speak of autumn crocuses, a beautiful herbaceous bulbous plant of the family Liliaceae, in autumn colors pink meadows and hills and mountain meadows.

The crocuses spread in Northern Italy to Tuscany, and his name obviously derives from its main area of \u200b\u200borigin, the ancient Colchis, a region on the Black Sea where this species was once widespread. The species name instead "autumnale" means of course, its flowering period. The crocuses
produces leaves in spring, after which they dry and fall from the plant to make way for the production of the flower.

Much like the cross, not to be confused with this because of its high toxicity. One plant in fact, if ingested, can cause serious disturbances to the body, and in large quantities can also be lethal.
For example, in France it was called "grass killer dog" and that the mountain people have always called the "herb of the headache." The meticulously avoids cattle to eat the fresh leaves. Only a few sheep love it and it is strongly recommended to drink milk.
The active ingredient responsible for what is colchicine, toxic alkaloid inhibits cell division by which time, in low doses, were prepared for gout medications and diuretics. Is still used in some drugs that obviously need to be administered under close medical prescription.

not worry, I have not prepared a recipe based on colchicum:) but of the whole blueberry muffin , sweets lightweight and perfect for this season, for their rosy color blend well with the autumn crocuses.
